Still remember earbuds? They are ultra-compact, lightweight and offer good sound quality for an affordable price. Being an old head-fier, I have seen their rise and gradual fading-out with the advent of more advanced and comfortable alternatives. Fortunately, the trickle of classic products has sparked continuous interest in this area.

For the most part, earbuds are able to offer quality sound, but also they can be used quite well when relying on volume to block out any surrounding noise; they light and tidy enough to wear on your morning commute as well. In a word, opting for in-ears can also be a perfect option.

Beyerdynamic DP100

DP100 is an entry level premier earbuds with powerful neodymium speakers that provide a balanced sound with deep and precise bass-response. With a plain and simple design, it just looks like a cheap pair of headphones you'd get at a gas station. Also, it uses high-grade rubidium magnetic unit, presenting an unadorned warm, full and clear sound, without any bloat and much clearer and more natural than anything at this price.

In a word, DP100 has a relatively balanced and standard HIFI sound quality. DP100 excels in mids frequency and strengthened vocals frequency, making it especially suited for listening to classic music and vocal of pop songs; it also has adequate and detailed low frequency. As of fan of Hifiman products, I was eager to try the ES100 earbuds and it is not a surprise to find that the sound is smooth and detailed. With a better seal created with the ear canal, a heightened bass response is produced, along with a good amount of extension, balancing well with the midrange. The midrange is still slightly forward in the perceived frequency response. Some clarity is lost due to the presence of the rubber ring, however, it remains acceptable. Tonality of the vocals is shifted to being slightly warm, with vocals having more body to them. However, treble quantity and fidelity is affected, with treble appearing to be slightly muffled. Therefore, as I see it, due to the muffling of the treble and a loss in clarity. this pair is best made for nostalgic pop music.

The notch on the rubber ring is a great improvement over the standard circular design on many earbuds and assists in keeping the earbuds firmly seated in the outer ear. Yet there will be some pain after hours of wearing. Those with different ear shapes are also given the flexibility to replace the notched rubber ring with the round ring. Some of my friends once tried to replace the original rubber ring with jawbone ERA and said they got a much better listening experience since then.
