Finally, the OnePlus 6T is here, bringing some significant improvement to the table. The notch is now smaller and the display is now bigger with a new Under-the-display fingerprint scanner, first time on any OnePlus device. There are some other tweaks too in camera and battery department so we recommend you to first have a look at the OnePlus 6 Review.
Now, if you have gone through the above review, let’s take a closer look at the OnePlus 6T in our in-depth review.

Improved Design and Build

Unlike the design change from the OnePlus 5 to 5T, the OnePlus 6T looks quite similar to its predecessor, the OnePlus 6. It has almost the same dimensions and the same Glass back and front with an aluminum frame in the middle. It still catches a lot of fingerprint smudges and it’s quite slippery too. The new OnePlus 6T has come in same old Colors-Midnight Black and Mirror Black but there is a new color, the Thunder Purple which will be officially hitting the market soon.

OnePlus 6T is still pretty comfortable to hold even if it’s slightly bulkier and thicker than before. The thickness of the 6T is 8.2mm while the weight is 185 grams. Even though the weight is slightly increased, the device is still pretty easy to use and doesn’t strain your hand even while long gaming sessions.
Upfront is the new display on the OnePlus 6T which is slightly bigger and has a small water drop notch. The notch houses the front camera, proximity and the ambient sensor while the earpiece is just above the notch. Although, there is no LED notification light may be due to the lack of space because of the small notch. The Power key is still on the right with Alert Slider just above it and the Volume key is on the left as well with SIM tray just above it. Down at the bottom, there is a speaker and a Type-C charging port but not 3.5mm audio jack because OnePlus has finally removed it starting with the 6T.
Moving to the rear, the camera placement is the same as that on the OnePlus 6 but there is no Fingerprint scanner as it is now moved to the front, under the display. Overall, the 6T looks a lot similar to the OnePlus 6 and lacks what its younger sibling lacks to like the IP certification, Wireless charging,

Slightly Taller Display with a Tiny Notch

With the 6T, OnePlus has shrunken down the notch and stretched the display making the chin a little smaller. Although, the panel still has the same resolution and exact same display quality but that’s not a bad thing as the OnePlus 6 already has the best Full HD AMOLED display on any smartphone. The only thing which is upgraded here is the introduction of the Corning Gorilla Glass 6 for better display protection.

The OnePlus 6T comes with a 6.4 inch AMOLED display which has a slightly pumped up resolution of 1080x2340 and a pixel density of 402 pixels-per-inch. The water-drop notch on the top of the display is way less attention-grabbing than the one on the OnePlus 6, helping in reaching a total screen-to-body ratio of ~85%. Also, the edges at the bottom are more rounded reducing the chin to a bare minimum.
Talking about the quality, the display is phenomenal for a Full HD OLED display. The colors are vibrant, the viewing angles are great, and the sunlight visibility is simply great. There are different Display color profiles choose from. Also, the new notch takes up way less portion of the screen, making videos or movie more immersive than ever before. It’s no doubt, a great display with slight improvements over the OnePlus 6. doubt, a great display with slight improvements over the OnePlus 6.

Same Top-Notch Performance and Software

With the OnePlus 6T, there is nothing new in the performance department. It is still using the Octa-Core Snapdragon 845 which is the highest powered SoC from Qualcomm until smartphone with Snapdragon 855 hits the market. With that being said, the performance is simply top-notch with zero lag or hiccups with even some intensive tasks. The Basic apps run smooth and fine and the same goes for heavy games too. We played PUBG with all the graphics settings maxed up and the gameplay with lag free throughout. There were no frame drops, lag whatsoever managing to handle any heavy game available on PlayStore as of now.

With the new 6T, OnePlus has eliminated the 64GB storage model and now the base model starts with 128GB onboard storage. There are a total of three variants depending upon the RAM and ROM. These are
· 6GB / 128GB
· 8GB / 128GB
· 8GB / 256GB
Just like the OnePlus 6, there is no issue with multitasking as even the heavy games stay in the memory. Also, the OnePlus 6T doesn’t have a Micro SD card for further memory expansion. However, since the base variant is 128GB now, storage isn’t going to be an issue.
Moving on to the software and Android Pie is here running under the layer of the Oxygen OS 9.0.5. What’s new here is the improved gestures for navigation and new camera modes which we will discuss later in the camera section. The new navigation gestures include a new gesture to switch between the recent apps and launching the Google or any 3rd party assistant by holding the Power key for 0.5 sec. However, these features are now available on the OnePlus 6 too after the update to Oxygen OS 9.0.2.

Oxygen OS has some great feature like the Dark mode, ability to use custom icon pack with default launcher, option to choose between navigation bard, Pie gesture or OnePlus gestures for navigation, and tons of customizations. Also, OnePlus is working hard for providing quick and stable software updates which is proven by the fact that OnePlus 6 and 6T are one of the handful of device running on the Android Pie.

Same Camera but Much Improved Battery Life

OnePlus has done nothing new with the camera hardware as the 6T houses the same Dual camera unit from its younger sibling. It consists of a 16-Megapixel primary sensor and a 20-Megapixel secondary sensor. Also, at the front, there is the same old 16 Megapixel sensor. The quality is pretty similar to the OnePlus 6, which is great. The images are sharp and vibrant with tons of details and the Portrait shots have good edge detection with natural blur effect. Pretty much the same story goes for the front camera too capturing sharp images.

What’s new with the camera is the two software enhancements, the Nightscape, and Portrait Lighting. The Nightscape mode helps is capturing long exposure shots during the night and digitally enhancing it providing a solid final image with more details and less noise. Although, this mode is now also available on the OnePlus 6 along with the portrait lighting. Portrait lighting isn’t a new mode but an enhancement of the portrait mode which enhances the light on a human face when taking images in portrait mode.

The Battery life on the OnePlus 6T is improved drastically. OnePlus has used the biggest battery on the 6T compared to any of their previous devices. It is a 3700 mAh non-removable battery which last really long. We tested the OnePlus 6T’s battery life and it resulted in around 7.5 hours of Screen-On-Time with heavy usage, which is just impressive. Also, OnePlus’s own fast charging solution is here too which tops up the device from 0% to 100% is just ~80 minutes.

More Features

Just like the OnePlus 6, the 6T also supports Dual SIM with Dual standby functionality. It also supports Dual VoLTE which is great to have. Other connectivity features on the device include WIFI, Bluetooth v5.0, and AGPS. Also, it includes the same sensors found on the 6 like Ambient Light Sensor, Gyroscope, Proximity, NFC, Fingerprint scanner etc.
