The S70 is another great rugged smartphone from Doogee. It is specially designed for professional games, at least, the way they advertised. Although the rugged and gaming combination may look a bit strange, the S70 manages to pull it very well. It also packs a big battery which provides great battery life and also has IP certification for dust and water resistance. To know more, take a look at the Doogee S70 review.
Doogee S70 Design and Build
Doogee S70 is a rugged smartphone specially designed for professional gamers. The ruggedness is achieved using Plastic and Rubber combination. It comes with six-side protection protecting the device from drops and falls. The back side of the device is covered with leather which looks premium but feels fake when touched. Although, it does provide nice grip and does gather smudges while using the device.
The S70 is no doubt a thick and heavy smartphone weighing 275 grams and has a thickness of 14mm. Yeah, it is quite uncomfortable to hold due to the heavyweight but hey, if you want all the protection and ruggedness, that’s the price you gotta pay. Also, the device is IP69K Dust and Water resistant which means it can withstand water much more than your usual IP68 certified smartphones.
On the front, there is a big screen with no notch. The upper portion of the screen houses the usual selfie camera, earpiece, proximity sensor etc. On the right, there is the Volume rocker and the Power key. The SIM slot along with a dedicated MicroSD card slot is on the left along with a button below it which enables Gaming mode but can be mapped to another function. At the bottom, you will find the Type-C charging port which is covered by a thick rubber flap There is a Dual camera module on the back along with a Fingerprint scanner. Overall, the build quality of the device is rock solid and feels premium but heavy in hands.
NO-Notch Display
Dogee has decided not to go with a notch on the S70. Instead, it houses an 18:9 screen is protected by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass. It is a 6 inch FullHD 2160x1080 IPS LCD display which has a pixel density of 401 pixels-per-inch. The bezels around the display aren’t thin but some people will do appreciate the notch-less screen.
Talking about the quality, it isn’t the best display in the segment but it is very good for regular use. The colors do look vivid and the viewing angles are average but the sunlight visibility. Also, the FullHD resolution makes the screen sharp which makes it easy to read small texts. During the review, I watch a couple of movies on the S70 and the experience was quite pleasant. Although, the display isn’t that immersive like other notched screens. One thing that impressed me about the S70 screen is the ability to work with gloves. You don’t have to take your gloves out to use the screen and it works well and smooth. Overall, the content consumption is really good for the price.
Performance and Software
The Doogee S70 is designed for gamers but the internals isn’t top of the line. It packs the MediaTek Helio P23 processor which is which is clocked to reach a maximum frequency of 2.5 GHz. It is an Octa-Core processor working along with Mali G71 GPU which handles the graphics demand. The S70 also packs 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. There is also a dedicated MicroSD card slot which can be used to expand the storage up to 256GB.
Talking about the performance, the basics app like Whatsapp, Facebook etc works really fine and smooth. There is no lag or hiccups with basic to moderate usage, however, things change when you want to play heavy games like PUBG or Asphalt 9. The Doogee S70 is capable of only playing the game in low-medium graphics setting which is quite opposite to the way they advertise the S70 as a gaming phone. We played PUBG on it and it worked with all the graphics setting turned down to medium but you can switch to low for a much smoother experience with the expense of some details. The gameplay was smooth and the frame rates were consistent.
The S70 comes with Android 8.1 Oreo onboard which is great, although, the experience is far from stock as Doogee has given some makeover to the UI. There are various apps which come preinstalled like ToolBag and more. It also comes with most of the useful Google apps like Gmail pre-installed. Scrolling through the UI feels smooth and the 6GB RAM allows for some heavy multitasking as well. Also, the internal storage is good enough for power users as well. There is a key on the right which when pressed enables the Gaming mode but you can switch it to some other function as well. Overall, the software feels responsive and lag free but it’s far from the stock Android experience.
Doogee S70 Camera and Battery Life
The Doogee S70 sports a Dual camera unit which comprises of a 12 Megapixel primary Sony sensor and a 5 Megapixel depth sensor. On the front, there is a 16 Megapixel sensor made by Samsung. The camera app is pretty basic and comes with all the basic features like Panorama, HDR, Portrait mode etc.
While the sensors look really good on papers, their real-world performance is quite opposite. The primary sensor does capture some great details during daytime but the overall image lacks saturation and looks washed out. During the night, the image quality takes a much deeper dive with noise and blurriness. Also, there is no EIS or OIS to help in dark situations either. The Portrait mode shots turn out well with quite a good edge detection but nothing too special which other devices can’t do. Moving on to the front camera, it captures more details than the rear camera because of the higher megapixel count but suffers the same lack of saturation issue. The video quality of the rear and front camera isn’t good as well with no option to record videos in 4K. Overall, the camera quality is nothing more than average.
The Doogee S70 packs a huge 5500 mAh battery which is not removable. It is a Polymer battery which is designed by BAK known for high density and long-lasting batteries. Doogee claims that it provides 765 hours Standby time and 80 Hours of Calling. During our test, which included some heavy gaming as well, the battery lasted around 1.5 days with a Screen on Time of around 7 hours. However, if you don’t play heavy games and use the device for basic tasks only, you can stretch the battery life for around 2 days which is awesome. It takes around 2 hours to charge the battery from completely dead to full and the S70 does support Wireless Charging as well.
