Most car buyers opt-out the expensive integrated parking radar and go for the cheaper installed ones. However, the function of those radars is usually limited to parking only. Nowadays, as the number of cars on the road grows exponentially, there is an urgent need for a system that can prevent accidents on the road. Today, I am introducing 70mai a smart driving recorder.
Unboxing
First of all, this is a device to be installed on to the rear-view mirror, and it works same as the mirror with the screen off. A licence sticker on the top indicates that this device has an integrated sim card with an unlimited connection to the 3G/4G internet. It also includes a 350cm-long power cable for smooth installation.

First glance
After tearing off the protective screen cover, a 30cm-long huge glassy screen is revealed. This is a product of high build quality with a premium looking. The large size ensures full coverage of almost any types of rear-view mirrors, and it provides a better rear-view to the driver.
The Micro-USB charging port and AV-in are located on the top, while the SD card slot on the bottom with a lid.
The plastic back cover features a fingerprint-proof surface. Also, a heat spreader and an adjustable camera are located at the back.

After mounting this device on to the mirror and switch it on, we can see a 6.8-inch touchscreen. This feature makes it super easy to use and allows it to display more info.
How to use
First of all, we need to install the 70mai app on the phone to use it.

The 140 degrees wide-angle driving recorder covers 3 lanes. An SD card is needed for saving the footage. This device support 16-64 Micro-SD card and an SD card of Class 10 standard is recommended.
Apart from the camera, it also includes a lane monitor function. It will remind you when you shift out of your lane while driving. When waiting at the crossing, it also tells you when the car in front starts moving.
Navigation

This device is preinstalled with Gaode navigation app. It is same as the one in your phone, and you can log in to your account to sync your saved route. The is also a ‘simple mode’ available which only displays the direction at the crossing. The product has a built-in GPS positioning system which is quick and accurate.
Wechat

You can log in to your wechat account via QR code and send a message by voice. However, due to the limitation of the wechat system, the voice messages are sent as a link. The receiver needs to open the link to listen to your message. Except for the voice message function, you can post your location and even photos with this app. Also, it reads out the received message for you allowing a hands-free experience.
Voice assistant
The voice assistant for this device is called ‘Xiaomai’. You can ask it for the local weather and the nearest car wash.
Music and radio
70mai is preinstalled with ‘Kuwo’ music. You can play your favourite song by asking ‘Xiaomai’ to play it.
As for the radio system, you can find a variety of cross-talks, jokes and audiobook in the Himalaya FM internet radio app.
By using the ‘Mijia’ app, you can control your home vacuum robot, smart air purifier and AC.
As I mentioned at the beginning, this product has an integrated sim card with unlimited internet quota. Bu the connection speed does drop beyond a threshold. It is free for 3 months after purchase, and you can use it as a wifi hotspot for your mobile device.
The downside
1. The mirror does not have an anti-glare function, and it is prone to the high beam from the car behind you.
2. It may be uncomfortable for you to use the mirror since there is a screen integrated.
3. The device has many functions, but it can be a distraction.
4. Since the ADAS function is not incorporated into the car, it will remind you even when you want to change the lane deliberately.
5. The size of this thing is a bit too big, and it might block a part of the view.
6. The recording downloading speed is pretty slow. Downloading a 2 min video to your phone via the hotspot took nearly 1 min.
7. Although it supports playing music, the sound quality isn’t great.
Who would need it
If your car already has a fully functional integrated ADAS, I would not recommend it to you. Since most functions are overlapped, and it blocks your anti-glare mirror.
However, I would strongly recommend it to you if your car doesn’t have any of these functions. If you are a guy who is happy to try some new tech product, this could be a good choice.
