Nokia 6.1 Plus is a device from Nokia in partnership with Google’s Android One project. It comes with stock Android Oreo and has a powerful spec which can run even some intense games. It has an impressive camera and a notched display for immersive multimedia consumption. The design is also trendy with a Glass back. So, let’s take a loot and the in-depth review of the Nokia 6.1 Plus.
Trendy Design and Build
Nokia 6.1 Plus is one of the best-looking devices in the segment. It has a metal frame with a glass front and back which looks premium. The back is smooth but since it’s glass, it is super slippery and catches fingerprint smudges easily which makes it hard to keep the device clean. Also, the glass back is prone to scratches also, hence, for extra protection a case is mandatory.
Nokia 6.1 Plus is a compact device, however, single-handed usage is still difficult. It is pretty comfortable to hold since it weighs only 151 grams, however, it is not the thinnest at 8mm thickness. Overall, it is the pretty lightweight which makes it easier to use for long gaming sessions. The device is available in three colors which are Glossy Blue, White and Glossy Black.
On the front, the Nokia 6.1 embraces a notch which isn’t too big to interfere with the media consumption. It has a pretty tall 19:9 display but the chin is pretty significant which has nothing except the Nokia branding. The front notch houses a selfie camera, ambient sensor, proximity sensor, and an earpiece. Moving to the sides, the Hybrid SIM slot can be found on the left while the Power key and the volume rocker can be found on the right side. Decent Display
Embracing the notch trend, the Nokia 6.1 Plus houses a small notch like the OnePlus 6. However, the chin below the display and the surrounding bezels are not small enough to make it completely bezel-less. Apart from that, it is a pretty big 5.8 inches IPS LCD display which has a resolution of 1080x2280 and a pixel density of 432 pixels-per-inch.
With such high pixel density, the display is no doubt sharp and crisp. The colors are punchy and multimedia consumption is impressive. We tried streaming Iron Fist on Netflix and we were impressed by how the colors looked on the display. Also, there is no Widevine L1 issue on the Nokia 6.1 Plus, hence, HD streaming is possible on services like Netflix, Amazon Prime etc.
Talking about sunlight visibility, it’s decent at best. The viewing angles are great as LCD panels are known to have good viewing angles. If you are not a notch person, the notch can be disabled in the settings which put a black bar in the notch area. However, since it’s not AMOLED, it doesn’t look any real. For protection, Nokia has used Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Overall, it is not the most immersive display but it is surely enough to enjoy content consumption when you don’t have your laptop or TV around.
Smooth Performance and Stock Software
Just like other smartphones in the segment, The Nokia 6.1 Plus is also powered by the mid-level Snapdragon 636 Octa-Core processor coupled with Adreno 509 GPU for better GPU performance. With that being said, the performance on the Nokia 6.1 Plus is exactly on the level of its competitors. It can handle usual tasks like web browsing, social media, etc pretty easily without any hiccups. Also, it does well with gaming too. Heavy games like PUBG runs well and smooth on the device making it a compelling choice for mobile gamers. With that being said, the Nokia 6.1 Plus can easily handle intense tasks without any hassle but don’t expect the flagship level performance from the device.
The Nokia 6.1 Plus comes in only a single variant which has 4GB of RAM and 64 GB of onboard storage. Also, the memory can be expanded using a Micro SD card up to 400 GB in expense to the second SIM slot. Overall, the multitasking is pretty smooth and works well just like other budget smartphones.
Coming to the Software front, this device is a part of Google’s Android One program which means stock Android experience with faster Android updates. With that being said, the Nokia 6.1 Plus runs on stock Android 8.1 Oreo with some additional bits and pieces. There is no pre-installed bloat on the device and the UI is totally responsive and smooth. The app launches quickly and transitions/ animations are all fluid.
There are some additional features like Ambient display which shows notifications when the device is in standby. Also, the software updates on Nokia 6.1 plus will be 2 Major cycles including Android P and Q and 3 years of security updates. Overall, the software front on the Nokia 6.1 is pretty strong.
Impressive Camera
Nokia 6.1 Plus houses a 16-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture and a 5 Megapixel secondary monochrome shooter which has an aperture of f/2.4. For selfie, there is a 16 Megapixel shooter with f/2.0 aperture. The camera app on the device comes with plenty of features like AR stickers, HDR, Portrait mode, Panorama, Dual-sight mode etc.
The image quality in good lighting condition is quite impressive. Images are detailed and have natural colors and the dynamic range is good too. Even the indoor shots look pretty good on the Nokia 6.1 Plus. Moving to the low light and the camera starts to struggle. The focus began to miss and images captured contains more noise and the lack of OIS makes it hard to capture stable images in dark conditions. Portrait mode on the rear camera has impressive edge detection too. It can also capture 4K videos at 30fps.
The selfie shooter on the Nokia 6.1 Plus captures decent selfies in good lighting condition. Also, the front camera can capture portrait shots too using algorithms for creating the depth effect. The quality of the selfie shooter degrades with the fall in light. Overall, the Nokia 6.1 Plus has a pretty impressive camera for the price.
Average Battery Life
The battery life on the Nokia 6.1 is underwhelming. Under the hood the 6.1 Plus houses a 3060 mAh non-removable battery which is pretty weak when compared to the other phones in the segment like Moto One Power etc. A usual day with the device including short sessions of gaming, frequent social media app, decent numbers of calls and the Nokia 6.1 Plus need recharging again at the end of the day. It not the weakest in terms of battery life, but a single day is all you can get out of this battery.
While the battery is small, Nokia shower certain level of concern by including the Quick Charge 4 support which can recharge the device pretty quickly. But hold your happiness as the device doesn’t ship with a fast charger which means it takes more than 2 Hours to completely charge from 0% to 100%.

Nokia 6.1 Plus Dual SIM and Dual Standby capabilities. However, it uses a Hybrid slot which means you have to take out the second SIM in order to use the Micro SD slot. Other connectivity features on the device include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v5 and A-GPS. There are a bunch of sensors on the device including the Fingerprint (rear-mounted), accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity sensor, and compass. However, it lacks NFC and common an IR blaster.
The rear-mounted fingerprint scanner on the device is pretty easy to reach due to the compact size factor of the device. With that being said, it is fast and unlocks the device instantly. Also, it works most of the time unless your fingers are wet or sweaty. There is a Face-Unlock feature which is pretty weak and inconsistent. It works mostly in good lighting condition but it’s slow and unreliable sometimes.
Nokia 6.1 Plus houses a single down-firing speaker which is pretty decent for the price. The earpiece doesn’t double as another speaker which means it lacks the stereo punch. However, it’s pretty common on budget smartphones so we can move it aside. What’s good is the presence of the 3.5mm audio jack which makes it easy to use wired earphones or headphones with the device.
