The Honor 10 is a masterpiece when it comes to design. It has a super reflective glass design with some unique color options which makes it stand out from other mid-range phones. The Dual camera unit on the Honor 10 comes with A.I which automatically adjust the camera settings depending on the scene. Let’s jump into the complete review of Honor 10 and see what makes the Honor 10 special.
Honor 10 Design
The Honor 10 is one of the most premium looking mid-range smartphone from Honor especially when the color is Phantom Blue. It has a 2.5D curved Glass back engulfed by a metal frame. The glass on the back is super glossy and make the device super slippery and smudge magnet. Honestly, it really hard to keep the Honor 10 clean. However, when it’s clean, it reflects light from when falls on the surface which looks aesthetically pleasing.
Though the Honor 10 is slippery, it is comfortable to hold due to the glass curving into the metal frame. Also, the device weighs just 153 grams and is just 7.7 mm thick. Honor 10 is compact due to the high screen-to-body ration which makes it a pocketable device easily. There are two different color option available out of which one is the Phantom Blue and the other one is Black.
Since its 2018 and notch is becoming a trend at a very fast rate, Honor 10 has adapted it too. There is a small notch on the front up top which houses the earpiece, selfie camera, proximity, and ambient light sensor. The fingerprint scanner resides in the chin embedded in the Glass. Coming to the sides, the Volume and the Power keys are on the left while the left only houses a Dual SIM tray. The headphone jack along with a Type-C port and a single speaker can be found at the bottom. Moving to the back of the Honor 10, it’s where the primary camera sensor resides along a Flash. The Honor 10, no doubt looks and feel premium with unique color options. However, there is no wireless charging even with the Glass back and no IP certification for Dust and Water resistance.
Display
The Honor 10 houses a big display and when I said big, I mean a really big display. It sports a 5.84 inch IPS LCD screen with a notch on the top. The screen has a resolution of 1080 x 2280 while the pixel density is 432 pixels-per-inch. Also, the screen is protected by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass to prevent scratches.
When it comes to quality, the display is good and has some punchy colors but it isn’t too sharp due to the big size and lower screen resolution. However, it’s fine and has great viewing angles. Although, the screen is reflective which makes it difficult to see under direct sunlight.
The big screen on the Honor 10 makes it a compelling mid-range for media consumption. We watched a couple of episodes on this big screen and the experience was great. The colors look saturated and the big size with small bezels made the experience immersive. There is also the notch up top and for people who can’t live with it, the notch can be disabled through an option in the settings.
Performance and Software on Honor 10
When it comes to performance, the Honor 10 does well. It is powered by Hisilicon Kirin 970 processor which is an Octa-core SoC based on 10-nanometer architecture. The kirin 970 is in the same league as the last year’s Snapdragon 835, which, no doubt, is great but not on par with the latest Snapdragon 845 chip. Also, it comes with Mali-G72 MP12 GPU which delivers some good performance.
With it comes to performance, it’s great and capable of running some intense games like PUBG Mobile but not on maxed out graphics. Drop the graphics setting a bit and the gameplay becomes completely smooth and responsive. The regular app works just fine without any lag or hiccup. The Honor 10 is a solid performer when it comes to basic or medium level tasks. However, it tends to overheat during intense gaming sessions so just keep an eye on it. There is only a single model based on RAM and storage which include 6 GB RAM and 128 GB storage. The memory is not expandable so the onboard storage is what you get only.
The Honor 10 runs on Android 8.1 Oreo hidden under the layer of EMUI 8.1. While the software is fast and responsive, it is filled with bloatware. However, not everything about the EMUI is bad as there are a couple of useful features like Knuckle gesture, One-handed mode, spam filter etc. The EMUI 8.1, as said by Honor, uses machine learning to analyze user behavior and adapt to it making it more dynamic and responsive. Talking about the updates, there s no news by Honor regarding the Android Pie update as of now.
Camera and Battery Life
The Honor 10 Packs a dual camera setup on the back which comprises a 16 Megapixel sensor with f/1.8 aperture and a 24 Megapixel monochrome sensor with the f/1.8 aperture as well. Up front, there is a 20 Megapixel selfie camera which f/2.0 aperture. The camera app on the Honor 10 is simple but has all the options like HDR, Portrait lighting, and a full Pro mode for camera geeks. The Cameras are assisted by the A.I. which is able to detect over 500 type of scenes and 22 type of objects and adjust the setting accordingly.
When it comes to quality, the rear camera on the Honor 10 performs well with good dynamic range, sharpness, and natural colors. However, A.I. tends to overexpose the images sometimes but it can be turned OFF completely. Night time shots are also great due to the presence of a monochrome sensor which preserves the details, however, it isn’t as good as the Night Mode on P20 Pro. The front camera is good for capturing great details. Both the front and rear camera can capture portrait shots which are good and has decent edge detection. The camera is capable of recording 4K videos @ 30 FPS stabilized by EIS.
The battery life on the Honor 10 is pretty good actually. It houses a 3400 mAh battery under-the-hood which easily lasts a day or little more depending upon the usage. With our usual battery life which started at 8 A.M., the battery completely drained around 11 P.M which is good for general users. The Honor 10 also supports 5V/4.5A fast charging but doesn’t support wireless charging even though it has a Glass back.
More Features on Honor 10
The Honor 10 is a Dual SIM capable device housing two Nano SIMs at a time. It also provides Dual standby and VoLTE functionality. The other connectivity features on the device include WIFI, Bluetooth, and GPS. The list of sensors on the device includes Fingerprint (front-mounted), accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity, and compass. It does have NFC and infrared port too.
