Honor 8X is the new budget device from Honor. It has a pretty huge display for a budget device with a small notch up top. Also, the battery life on the Honor 8X is pretty impressive too and the design is just impressive. So without waiting, let’s take a look at the Honor 8X Review.
Design and Build
Honor 8X is one of the few budget devices that stands out of the bunch when it comes to design and build. It had what Honor call the “Visual Grating Effect” which creates a dual tone color pattern made by using multiple layers of Glass. Not only the Glass looks premium but the effect also adds up to it given a more unique look to it. There are 3 different color options to choose from which are- Black, Blue, and Red.

Honestly, the Honor 8X is a pretty huge device as it houses a big display. However, Honor has managed to keeps the device thin at just 7.8mm and comfortably light at just 175 grams. Though it’s thin and lightweight, the device is not easy to use with just one hand because how tall it is. Also, it is quite slippery and collects fingerprint smudges like crazy which makes it hard to keep the device clean.
Upfront, the Honor 8X houses a tall display with a notch up-top. The notch isn’t too huge and houses an earpiece, selfie camera, ambient light and proximity sensor. The Volume and the Power button are on the right side while the SIM tray is on the left. At the bottom, there is a single speaker, mic, a MicroUSB charging port, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

Moving to the back, there is a Dual Camera setup arranged vertically and a Fingerprint scanner located in an easy to reach position. Overall, Honor 8X looks premium with its dual tone effect which shifts shades under different lights. It surely stands out of the budget bunch in terms of design. However, it lacks IP certification for water and dust resistance. Also, the back glass gets scratched easily so it’s better to use a case.
Display
Honor 8X shines with one of the biggest display in the budget segment. It sports a 6.5-inch display made immersive with a small notch on the top. The bezels around the display are small and chin is also smaller compared to the previous Honor devices. With a small chin and notch, the display surely looks great.
The Honor 8X has an IPS LCD display which has a resolution of 1080x2340 along with a pixel density of 396 pixels-per-inch. It’s a sharp display which produces vibrant colors although the blacks aren’t as inky as found on an OLED display. The viewing angles are great and the sunlight visibility of the display is pretty legit too.

Overall, the display on the Honor 8X is pretty impressive. It’s sharp and the big footprint with a small notch makes it a solid companion for media consumption. We watched a couple of episodes on Netflix and the experience was superb. Yeah, it isn’t as good as high-end Samsung panels but it’s surely one of the best display in the budget bunch.
Performance and Software
The performance on the Honor 8X is pretty similar to other budget devices like the Redmi Note 5 Pro etc. It has Honor’s own Hisilicon Kirin 710 based on 12-nanometer architecture. It is an Octa-Core processor which reach a max frequency of 2.2 GHz. Along with the SoC, there is Mali-G51 GPU for handling graphics related tasks.

Honor 8X is a decent performer handling general tasks like a champ. Browsing the web, using social media apps, capturing photos etc feels smooth and responsive. However, when it comes to intense tasks, less intense games like Subway Surfer, Temple Run etc runs smoothly while heavy games like PUBG runs well and smooth in medium graphics setting only.
Honor 8X comes in 3 different variants based on RAM and storage. The variants are-
· 4GB/64GB
· 6GB/64GB
· 6GB/128GB
All the three models support memory expansion by a MicroSD card slot up to 400GB through a dedicated slot.
The Honor 8X runs on Android Oreo hid under the layer of EMUI. Talking about it, the software feels pretty smooth and responsive with nifty animations. Also, the bloatware is significantly reduced and only a few apps come preinstalled like Netflix, Camera360 etc. EMUI also has a gesture-based navigation which is quite similar to that found on the OnePlus 6T.

It also has a Theme app which has some themes but we still liked our Nova Launcher setup so we used it anyway. The software experience on the Honor 8X is pretty good with an update to Pie coming soon.
Camera and Battery Life
The new Honor 8X sports a Dual Camera unit which comprises a 20 Megapixel sensor with f/1.8 aperture and a 2 Megapixel depth sensor. Upfront, there is a 16 Megapixel selfie shooter. There are some useful camera modes in the app like Slow-mo, aperture, night mode, AI etc. The camera app is pretty simple and easy to use.

Moving on to the quality of the cameras, the images taken from the rear cameras look great with a decent amount of details and sharpness. However, it has the tendency of overexposing bright areas sometimes. There is also an AI mode which recognizes the scene and uses auto-enhancements. The front camera also captures some great images in well-lit conditions. However, when it comes to low light, the quality of the images takes is below average throughout the board. There is no Optical stabilization and the result is really visible in the videos. Honor 8X can record 1080p videos @60 fps from the rear camera. Portrait mode is there too and the quality is good with decent edge detection.
Honor 8X houses a 3750 mAh battery isn’t removable. Though it’s not the biggest in the budget range it’s great. The device easily manages to last a whole day with just a single charge. Our typical day usage includes casual gaming, frequent social media, and web browsing, a couple of hours on Netflix, normal amount of phone call. With such usage, we were able to get around 6–7 hours of screen on time which is impressive. Honor 8X still uses the old school Micro USB port for charging and there is no wireless charging.

More Features
Honor 8X has support for Dual SIM with Dual Standby. It also supports LTE while other connectivity options include WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS. There is also a dedicated MicroSD card slot for expanding memory up to 400 GB. Honor 8X has a couple of sensors including an Ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, fingerprint sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass.
The rear-mounted fingerprint scanner on the Honor 8X is pretty quick and reliable too. All it takes is just a quick tap to unlock the device. There is also a Face Unlock feature which unlocks the device real quick, however, isn’t secure like the Iris scanner or the Face ID.
