Huawei has launched its latest premium smartphone, the Mate 20 Pro. The key feature of the device is the triple Leica sensors and the stunning design with 5 impressive color options. Also, the specs of the device are simply top-notch and on papers, it looks flawless with the exception of the headphone jack. Let’s dive deeper in the complete review of Huawei Mate 20 Pro and see what makes it the most premium Android device
Premium Looking Design
One thing we can surely say is that the Mate 20 Pro is one of the most premium looking Android smartphone this year. The way it reflects the light and the ways it shines is just super impressive. Huawei Mate 20 Pro has a Front and Rear glass build with metal frame in between and the back glass panel has this vinyl texture which helps with gripping the device more than you think, otherwise, the device will just slip out of your hands.

The Mate 20 Pro is available is 5 super premium colors which are -Emerald Green, Midnight Blue, Twilight, Pink Gold, and Black. Our pick is the twilight version because of its unique and flashy look but none of the colors look any less than a premium. The phone is comfortable to hold considering it’s just 8.6 mm thick and weighs 189 grams. However, the device is a fingerprint magnet which makes it hard to keep the device clean.
Coming to the front, the Mate 20 Pro comes with a tall display with an iPhone XS like notch on top housing the front camera, notification LED, proximity, infrared camera, earpiece, and flood illuminator. The red Power button along with the Volume rocker can be found on the right side of the device. At the bottom, there is a Type-C charging port which also acts a chamber for the speaker present in it. There is also the SIM Try and Mic at the bottom.
Moving to the back, there is a square shaped camera unit which packs 3 camera sensors and 1 Flash. The module is present in the top center and adds up to the premium look of the Mate 20 Pro. With that being said, the device is also IP68 Dust and Water resistant and supports Wireless charging too. The Mate 20 Pro is no doubt one of the most premium and unique looking smartphones this year.
High Res Curved Display
The display on the Mate 20 Pro reminds me of the Samsung S9’s display though the panel itself is not made by Samsung but by BOE. Although, it’s not quite on the level of Samsung panel but it looks impressive with the curves that go to the sides just like on the S9 or any other premium Samsung devices. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro comes with a 6.39 inch AMOLED display protected by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass. It has a resolution of 1440 x 3120 and a pixel density of 538 pixels-per-inch.

With that being said, the display is just stunning and supports HDR too. To really dive in the full potential of the display, just play a 1440 HDR video on YouTube and you will be immersed in the ultimate visual experience. Although, you have to change the display res to max as the resolution by default is low just to save the battery. The display is super sharp, has excellent viewing angles and is comfortably visible under direct sunlight.
There is a big notch up top quite similar to the iPhone X or XS but it does houses sensors like Flood illuminator, infrared camera etc for secure face Unlock operation. Also, there is an option to turn off the notch area for people who don’t like the notch. Overall, the display is stunning, sharp and gets really bright providing an immersive experience.
Superb Performance and Better than Before Software
The Huawei Mate 20 Pro has HiSilicon Kirin 980 under the hood which is the World’s first 7nm SoC in any Android device and second after Apple. It is an Octa-Core chip which can reach a max frequency of 2.6 GHz. For Graphics, the device uses the Mali-G76 MP10 which provide some impressive Graphics performance.

Talking about the performance, it’s no less than any Flagship level device in 2018. It can easily handle heavy games like PUBG and Asphalt 9 in Max graphics settings with any hiccups. With basic tasks like browsing the web, using social media apps, capturing images etc, the device doesn’t even slow down a bit. Also, the Mate 20 Pro comes in 2 different storage configuration out of which one include 6GB RAM and 128GB storage and the other one include 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. Both the variants have no issue with multitasking as even the 6GB RAM is plenty enough to handle some heavy multitasking. Also, both the variants support memory expansion using the new Nano SD cards up to 256GB.
Out of the box, the Mate 20 Pro runs on the latest Android Pie with Huawei’s customized EMUI 9.0 skin on top. No doubt, Huawei has finally trimmed down the interface by removing bloat and unnecessary option from the interface making it close to the simplest form.

The EMUI also comes with gesture-based navigation found on devices like OnePlus 6T or iPhone XS and they feel smooth and responsive as well. However, there is no app drawer and the apps are scattered across the home screen quite similar to the MIUI. But there is nothing to worry about as on Android, you can always install a 3rd party launcher to change the look and feel. Out Mate 20 Pro is running on the October security patch and support Project Treble too.
Unique Camera System and Damn Great Battery Life
Huwaei’s unique approach to the smartphone camera system can be seen on the Mate 20 Pro in its full potential. There are 3 different sensors on the rear including a primary 40-Megapixel sensor with f/1.8 aperture, an 8-Megapixel sensor with f/2.4 aperture, and a 20-Megapixel Ultra-wide sensor with f/2.2 aperture. All these Leica sensors combined with the A.I gives some extraordinary results. There are plenty of different modes like Night mode, Super Macro, Slow-Mo, and Artificial Image Stabilization.

Talking about the quality, the Mate 20 pro takes some extraordinary images even when you just point and shoot. The AI mode will assist you in choosing which sensor will capture the best images like for some scenes it will advise you to switch to the wide angle lens. Talking about it, the ultra wide sensor captures some great results even at times when you feel like Ultra wide isn’t a great option. Also, the Night works impressively taking some exceptional low light shots with a huge amount of details. The A.I.S will assist you in capturing images without the use of any tripod. Hence, no matter if it’s day or night, the Mate 20 Pro will give impressive results only.
There are cinematic filters too like Background Blur or A.I. color which works in real-time and are impressive but works only when a human face is detected. Also, the camera module is capturing 4K videos with solid stabilization. Upfront, there is a 24 Megapixels wide sensor as well which captures impressive images day and night and capable of recording FullHD videos. Overall, the camera is super impressive with plenty more features that are super useful and fun to use like 5X optical zoom, excellent portrait mode etc.

Talking about the battery life, the Mate 20 Pro houses a 4,200 mAh battery, one of the biggest in class. The battery life is simply exceptional for a flagship device with around 7 hours of screen-on-time depending upon the usage. This means that it can last for around 1.5 days easily and a lot more on standby. It also comes with Huawei’s fast charging solution which only takes around 80 min to completely charge from 0% to 100%. The device also supports wireless charging also it has a unique feature too known as Reverse wireless charging allowing the device to be used as a Wireless charging pad for charging other devices wirelessly.
