Hifi Headphones can be cheap. But as tempting as it is to go for the suspiciously low headphone prices, I’d advise spending just a little more, you’ll find a pair you’ll love and can use for years to come.
The good news is you don’t have to spend much at all. In this post, I’ve rounded up several budget-tier headphones to tell you how great they sound for a small sum of money.
AKG K420
When you want to take your personal listening experience to the next level, the AKG K 420 mini on-ear headphones let you do it in style. Their comfortable ear pads and headband are perfect for everyday use. They feature a lightweight design with a unique 3D-axis folding mechanism that allows you to store them in a small carrying pouch. The K 420’s will connect to virtually any portable audio device, including an older iPhone. And when it comes to style, you’ll definitely stand out, thanks to the headphones’ blue-denim design.
By using a semi-open design, the K 420 delivers rich, detailed sound that’s free of distortion, even at high listening levels. High-performance drivers reproduce low frequencies down to 13Hz, while high frequencies are reproduced in stunning detail out past 27kHz. With their wide dynamic range and high output, the K 420 is an affordable upgrade to high-performance on-ear headphones compatible with nearly all of today’s audio devices.
Moreover, the K 420 uses a hard, gold-plated jack plug which improves contact and resists corrosion while enhancing sound clarity. For the finest possible transmission of sound without any signal loss, the K 420 uses a durable 99%-oxygen-free cable.
KOSS Porta Pro
Koss’ on-ear Porta Pro headphones were launched in 1984 and they’ve remained unchanged ever since. So the first thing you’ll notice about the PortaPros is that they look like something from the 1980s.
These headphones retain the same design both internally and externally. The earcups are secured to your head by a thin steel headband that adjusts with two sliders that tighten and loosen the tension.
According to Koss, the sound output is handled by “neodymium iron boron rare earth magnet structures” that provide a 15–25,000Hz frequency range, which certainly sounds like random vendor jargon, but truth is that for the sub-$50 range, the Koss PortaPros are the headphones to beat. There’s also a surprising amount of bass weight, without skewing or muddying the balance, and while their treble is perhaps not the sweetest we’ve ever heard, it is far from coarse or distracting.
CREATIVE Aurvana LIVE!2
Winner of the prestigious 2014 Red Dot Award for Product Design, the Aurvana Live!2 combines modern design with the latest technology for intuitive functionality.
It is designed to deliver true-to-life acoustic performance with tighter bass. The headset is powered by 40mm Bio-Cellulose drivers for impeccable audio while the earcups’ premium protein faux leather cushions with memory-foam provide excellent seal against external noise. They also provide unmatched comfort for extended wear.
Bio-cellulose is a natural fiber which has extremely fine fiber and high purity. Using cutting-edge biotechnology processes, this material is compressed to produce an ultra-thin diaphragm that is ideal for headphone drivers, delivering sound velocity comparable to an aluminium or titanium diaphragm, while giving warm and delicate sound of paper ones. The result is faithful, crystal clear and detailed highs, coupled with remarkable deep and rich bass tones.
I found almost everything to be better with the newer model, from details, bass, layering, soundstage, etc. I must say that it really impressed me in the soundstage department as it has a very well layered presentation. On some songs it really impressed me of how natural the sounds from the back layers come in front without blending with the other layers… At 130$ the Aurvana Live!2 has an excellent price/performance ratio. So, I think Creative strikes again, offering excellent performance at a very accessible price.
PHILIPS Fidelio S2
The Philips Fidelio S2 are high-quality earphones with a superbly-tuned sound and great build quality. Though it can’t quite compete with top multi-driver earphones, but it’s a good first-wave effort from Philips.
