Honor Magic 2 Review | Sliding Smartphone With Six Cameras

The Honor Magic 2 is a great device from Huawei and comes with some unique qualities. It has a sliding mechanism which hides the front camera and the earpiece. There are a total of 6 cameras on the Magic 2, three on the back and three on the front and comes with 40W fast charging solution. The fingerprint scanner is located under the display which is also futuristic.
To know more about it, take a look at the Honor Magic 2 Review.

Honor Magic 2 Design

Honor phones are very well known for their distinctive design and Honor Magic 2 is no exception here. It comes with Gradient color patterns which shift colors when exposed to light at different angles. While this effect is becoming quite common on budget phones too, Honor still does it better than others. However, this means there are no solid color options and if you are not into the gradient stuff, you can use the matte black case which comes in the box. The case also helps in keeping the fingerprint smudges away which is a huge problem with the glass back phones. There are 3 different Gradient color options-Blue, Black and Red.

Another unique thing about the Honor Magic 2 is the sliding mechanism which houses the triple camera unit, and the earpiece. By using the sliding mechanism, Honor made it possible to achieve a full bezel-less design with no notch. However, using moving parts in a smartphone compromises its durability but the mechanism on the Magic 2 feels sturdy and has a satisfying click to it. Although, dust can accumulate in between the front and the sliding panel which requires some special care. Overall, the mechanism feels durable and doesn’t feel like wearing off any soon.

With that being said, the Honor Magic 2 has a satisfying weight to it which makes it feel more premium. It weighs around 203 grams and has a thickness of 8.3 mm which isn’t too sleek but necessary to incorporate the sliding mechanism. Upfront, there is nothing but the giant display with a small earpiece. The Volume keys and the Power key are located on the right side while the left side houses a Dual SIM tray. At the bottom, there is a Type-C charging port, primary mic, and the speaker grill but no headphone jack since Magic 2 doesn’t have one. One the back is the Triple camera unit arranged much like the cameras on the Honor P20 Pro.
Overall, the design screams premium but it lacks some of the premium features like Water and Dust resistance and Wireless charging.

No-Notch Screen

Using the sliding design, Honor has achieved the bezel-less design on their latest Magic 2 smartphone. There is no notch and the bezels are slim except the chin which is a little bit bigger compared to the side bezels. There is nothing on the screen which will interfere with the media consumption providing a truly immersive experience. Talking about the screen, the Magic 2 comes with a 6.39 inch AMOLED panel which has a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels and pixel density of 402 pixels-per-inch. The screen supports 100I-P3 coverage and comes with a screen protector pre-installed.

About the screen, the colors are vibrant and the blacks are inky. The viewing angles are great and the text appears sharp and crisp. Talking about the brightness, it is not the brightest screen we’ve ever seen but it’s bright enough to be comfortably viewable under direct sunlight. Viewing media on this screen is just astonishing. We watched the Avengers Infinity War and we really enjoyed every moment of the movie due to the vibrant and immersive screen. The Fingerprint scanner is embedded under the screen just like the OnePlus 6T or the Honor Mate 20 Pro and using a 3rd party screen protector can interfere with the scanning ability of the scanner. Overall, the screen is simply amazing and excellent for gaming and media consumption.

Flagship Performance with Bloated Software

Performance wise, the Honor Magic 2 isn’t less than any other Flagship smartphone in the market. It is powered by the same Octa-core Kirin 980 chip which power the Honor Mate 20 Pro. The HiSilicon Kirin 980 chip is based on 7-NM architecture and is no doubt one of the best-performing SoCs in the market right now. Hence, not only the Magic 2 does a great job in benchmarks but the real world performance is also solid.

One of the best ways to test the performance is by playing demanding games like PUBG mobile, Shadowgun Legends, and Asphalt 9. Each of the three games runs smooth and well with consistent frame rates throughout the gameplay in the highest graphics settings. The Mali-G76 MP10 is a powerful GPU which can easily handle demanding app and games easily. The Honor Magic 2 comes in two different RAM and storage configuration. You can either go for 6GB or 8GB RAM and choose the storage option between 128GB and 256GB. There is no MicroSD card slot but the base model has enough storage to store plenty of app and games.

The Honor Magic 2 comes with Magic UI 2.0 based on Android 9.0 Pie. It is one of the few devices which ships with Android Pie onboard while many Flagship devices still running on Android Oreo. The Magic UI is simply the EMUI found on other Honor devices just rebranded. If you have ever used any Honor device, the software will feel like home. There is no app drawer and software comes with preloaded Chinese apps since the device is meant to be sold in Chinese markets only. The icons are big and the overall theme looks colorful and cartoonish. There is a smart assistant called the “YOYO” which is technically supposed to have machine learning capabilities but we were unable to test it since it doesn’t understand English as of now. Overall, the heavily themed UI feels smooth to navigate and the apps load fast and quick but it’s nowhere near the clean stock Android experience.

Camera Quality and Battery Life

Honor devices are known for their incredible camera setup and Magic 2 is one of them. It comes with a total of six cameras, three on the front and three on back. The rear camera setups come with a 16 Megapixel primary sensor with f/1.8 aperture, another 16 Megapixel sensor with f/2.2 aperture and a 24 Megapixel monochrome sensor with f/1.8 aperture. The front camera setup contains a 16 Megapixel primary sensor with f/2.0 aperture, and two 2 Megapixel depth sensors which are only used for facial recognition and portrait mode. Honor Magic 2 does come with A.I scene detection which automatically adjusts various parameters depending upon the scene.

Talking about the image quality, it’s pretty impressive as the images captured are vibrant and have high level of details. Also, the dynamic range is on point which makes capturing the moment more fun. Even in dark situations, the camera performs really well and manages to capture plenty of details in the subject without much noise and blur. The portrait mode shots are great as well with good edge detection and you can also play with the portrait light feature as well. The primary camera can record 4K videos in 30 fps and the stability is quite good as well.

Due to the sliding mechanism, Honor could only stuff a 3500 mAh battery in the Magic 2 smartphone. While it’s small compared to other Honor devices like the Mate 20 Pro etc, it does the job well. For starters, the battery was able to last a little more than a full day. We used the device for a few days and in our test, we played some games as well. With such usage, the battery was around 30% at the end of the day which was impressive. Also, Honor Magic 2 does support 40W fast charging technology through which the device can be charged from 0% to 50% in just 16 minutes. However, there is no Wireless charging on the Magic 2.

Honor Magic 2: More features

The Honor Magic 2 comes with Dual SIM support with VoLTE. There is no memory card slot and all you have is the internal storage. The connectivity features on the device include the WIFI, Bluetooth and AGPS. Talking about the sensors, the Magic 2 comes with Face ID, fingerprint (under display), accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity, and compass. It also comes with NFC for instant pairing.

There is a Fingerprint scanner under the display which feels tricky to use. If you place your thumb or finger slightly out of place, it won’t work. However, when it does recognize, it works fast and quick. The scanner is secure but isn’t as convenient as traditional Fingerprint scanners. There is also a Face Unlock feature which uses the 2 front cameras to scan the face and unlock it. The process is secure and quick too also much better when compared to the clumsy fingerprint scanner.
