Roborock, one of the leading manufacturer of smart vacuum cleaners was established in 2014. Later Xiaomi, one of the biggest tech giant, invested in Roborock and manufactured the first generation of the robot vacuum cleaner. We reviewed the second generation Xiaomi MiJia Roborock S50 robot cleaners and it impressed us a lot. Unboxing

The Xiaomi Roborock S50 comes in a cardboard box with Roborock branding on the front. Well, the packaging is nothing too exciting but inside, it comes with all the necessary attachments and accessories to bring out the full potential of the robot vacuum cleaner. Opening it up, you will find the Roborock S50 itself along with along with a charging station. There is also a transparent mat which keeps the water away when the vacuum is charging.

Apart from these, there are 2 mopping pads, 1 air filter, and all of them are washable. You will also find a particle removal tool and a 500ml dustbin inside. There are some booklets inside with information regarding the S50 robot vacuum cleaner. Overall, the packaging is pretty standard and the stuff inside (apart from the S50) are highly useful.

Design and Build

The Xiaomi Roborock S50 has a circular disc-shaped with a small protrusion up top. It is around 2 cm in height and has a diameter of 34 cm. The entire construction is done very well and the robot cleaner can easily handle some drops. On the top, there is a Laser Distance Sensor which is one of the finest navigational system used on a robot vacuum. Apart from that, there are three buttons on top to start and stop the robot, send it back to the charging dock, and to activate spot cleaning.

There are two big speakers in the middle portion along with the cleaning tray and a WIFI reset button. Flipping the Roborock S50 over, you will find two wheels which are now bigger and helps in climbing obstacles up to 2 cm in height. These wheels allow the robot to easily climb up thick carpets for cleaning purpose. There is also a cleaning brush, corner rotating brush, and a mop can also be attached expanding the ability of the Robot cleaner to mop the floor. Overall, the design pretty much resembles the previous generation model but new bits and pieces make it a completely different and powerful device.

Laser Distance Sensor

Usability and Performance

It cleans the area well and even reaches some tight corners which other cleaners may have trouble reaching. There is a plastic water reservoir which fits below the cleaners for holding water. Through a small hole, the robot cleaner dispenses the water on the mopping pad to moves to carry out the cleaning work. However, the flaw here is that the mopping doesn’t turn off when a carpet is reached, this means the cleaner starts mopping the carpet instead of vacuuming. Although, the drawback can be overcome by using the spot cleaning feature while mopping to prevent accidental mopping of the carpets.

There are 4 different modes on the Roborock from Slow to Turbo which changes the suction power. Using different suction modes, you can adjust the vacuum power based on the type of dirt and floor.
